In North Carolina, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has regulations for the use of decals on commercial vehicles. These regulations apply to vehicles that are used in interstate or intrastate commerce and that have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more, or a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 pounds or more.
The regulations require that commercial vehicles display certain decals or markings to identify the vehicle and its purpose. These decals may include the following:
- USDOT number: This is a unique identification number assigned to the vehicle by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It must be displayed on the door of the vehicle or on the front of the cab, in letters and numbers at least 2 inches high and 1/2 inch wide. In colors that have high contrast with the color of the vehicle.
- State of registration: The state in which the vehicle is registered must be displayed on the door of the vehicle or on the front of the cab, in letters and numbers at least 2 inches high and 1/2 inch wide. In colors that have high contrast with the color of the vehicle.
- Company name: The name of the company that owns or operates the vehicle must be displayed on the door of the vehicle or on the front of the cab, in letters and numbers at least 2 inches high and 1/2 inch wide. In colors that have high contrast with the color of the vehicle.
- Hazardous materials placards: If the vehicle is used to transport hazardous materials, it must display placards indicating the type of hazardous materials being transported. These placards must be placed on the front, rear, and both sides of the vehicle, in a visible location.
In addition to these requirements, commercial vehicles must also comply with any additional regulations that may be specific to their type of operation or the type of goods they are transporting.
It is important for commercial vehicle operators to be aware of and comply with these regulations to ensure the safety of themselves and other road users. Violations of these regulations may result in fines or other penalties.
