3 Healthcare Organizations Highlight the Impact of Effective Signs & Graphics

Author: Jayme Nelson

The world is growing and we all need care. Even as many healthcare professionals are adapting to offer more virtual options, there is no complete replacement for in-person care. Whether it is a large campus of multiple buildings or a smaller clinic situated in a mixed-use retail area, ensuring patients know where to go and how to get there is key. Your signs and graphics—or the lack thereof—may be the first experience that someone has in connection with your healthcare brand. Make sure they are working as hard as you are to provide your patients with optimal care.

Take a look at a handful of our favorite healthcare sign projects and the organizations they represent.

Oviedo Medical Center

When the Oviedo Medical Center expanded and built a new location on their property, they needed a range of branded signs and graphics to outfit the new healthcare facility. Large “Coming Soon” and “Now Open” banners were hung on the outside of the building to encourage curiosity and build awareness. An illuminated monument sign was installed to point the way to the emergency room day and night, and directional graphics on the glass doors help those looking for emergency treatment after-hours.

Inside, directories and wayfinding signs show patients and visitors where to go. Brushed aluminum dimensional letters and logos visually identify different areas. Aluminum snap frames were placed throughout the hospital and its elevators allowing easy change-outs with different messages and promotions. Wall graphics and framed prints communicate the mission and vision statement while name badges with emergency codes on the back keep employees identified and informed at all times.

California KiDDS Pediatric Dentistry

During the construction of a new location, California KiDDS Pediatric Dentistry was looking for high-end, bright, professional signs and visual graphics. To fit with their brand, they wanted a clean, upscale look that was also kid-friendly.

New channel letters and an illuminated monument sign were placed outside the building, and window graphics were installed on the front door to identify the entrance. Inside, a dimensional brushed aluminum logo sign hangs behind the front desk and helps serve as a focal point for the waiting area. Frosted vinyl graphics added to acrylic panels for the illuminated cabinets at each patient station enhance the décor and extend the fun, California KiDD's branding. Frosted graphics were also placed on interior office doors to provide privacy.

Riverside Healthcare

Serving the local community since 1964, Riverside Healthcare updated its signs and graphics to ensure patients and visitors are able to more easily find their way around the facility. Large exterior directional signs around the exterior of the medical facility help visually identify specific buildings and entrances. The emergency area signs were updated with bright, bold colors and letters to enhance visibility and reduce potential confusion during times of stress. An LED sign was also placed near the emergency area entrance, giving the healthcare facility the ability to change messages as needed.

Inside the buildings, dimensional letters and Riverside Healthcare logos identify specific floors. Signs are wall-mounted and suspended from ceilings to distinguish different building wings and better guide patients and visitors. Room identification signs and ADA signage are installed throughout to provide accessibility for all. Stretched fabric banner stands help promote healthcare services. Wall murals highlight appreciation for donors, as well as recognize loyal employees. In the Heart and Vascular Institute, the outline of a fluorescent heart was placed on each end of the donor wall display, complemented by hanging, printed hearts and floor graphics.

As the healthcare industry continues to adapt and adjust, signage has an important role to play. Assess your current visual communications. Do they welcome patients and visitors? Do they help people get around your building efficiently? Do they adequately build awareness of your brand and the services that you provide? With well-planned and well-executed healthcare signs and graphics, you can focus on what is most important: making sure your patients get the best care possible.

Each of these facilities highlighted have a healthy visual communication program in place. To see more of our favorite medical signs and graphics projects, take a look at a few videos here
